5 Tips to Avoid Getting Locked Out

Finding yourself locked out of your property can feel like a disaster. Learn how to avoid this happening by following these 5 simple tips.

Have you ever got locked out of your house or flat? It’s not fun at all, and it can be an incredibly frustrating experience.

As experienced Edinburgh locksmiths, we know a thing or two about people getting locked out. So here are five ways to prevent it from happening to you.

1. Change Your Old Locks

One of the first things to do if you are worried about getting locked out is to change your old locks if they no longer function smoothly. This is a good sign that something could fail.

Often, this happens at the most inconvenient moment. To prevent this from happening to you, consider changing the locks on your front and back doors with a newer lock if they no longer function well.

2. Use a Door that Locks with a Key

One of the most common ways to lock yourself out is when you leave without your key and the door locks behind you.

If this has happened to you, you might want to change your lock to one that locks with a key. This way, if you forget your key, you won’t get locked out. Just remember to lock your door to keep your home secure.

3. Get a Lockbox

Another idea is to use a lockbox. These are secure boxes that you can access using a combination code and store the spare key inside.

You don’t have to hang it next to the front door. Instead, you could put one up in your garden.

This can also make it easy for other trusted people to get access without you having to give out spare keys. For example, when your neighbour visits to feed the cat while you’re on holiday.

4. Give a Spare Key to a Neighbour

If you don’t want to use a lockbox, give a spare key to a trusted neighbour living nearby.

Obviously, you have to trust them completely by giving them access to your home. But if you ever lose your key, you can simply pop over to your neighbour’s home and grab your spare.

5. Use Smart Locks

Finally, consider switching your front door lock to a smart lock. There are lots of different types of smart locks available these days.

You could get an electric smart lock that uses a combination code, so you don’t need a key at all. Others use mobile apps to open and lock your door. Some even use fingerprint scanners.

Whichever option you choose, they can be a great way to avoid getting locked out.

Keep Your Locksmith’s Number Handy

These should help you to avoid getting locked out in the future, but sometimes things go wrong even when you take precautions. For that reason, it’s always a good idea to have the details of an emergency locksmith on hand.
