How to have an adventure in New York State
New York is full of adventurous people. Here's an article about one advernture possibility if you like hiking, sleeping in the great outdoors, and climbing.
The Shawangunk Mountains, aka The Gunks, are 88 miles from Brooklyn. You can cycle that in 10 hours via the North Country Trailway, or you can walk it in two very long days (only for the experienced).
If you decide to hike to The Gunks, then you'll be looking at taking an overnight stay en route. I am sure you will be able to find somewhere secluded to use a camping hammock. For the North Country Trailway, because it's a very long (but wonderful) trek, you would be advised to use walking poles - these are great for safety and stability, and you can take some of the load using your upper body.
The Gunks has enjoyable climbing opportunities and challenges for all levels, and it's an amazing place to escape to - you will find nature, adventure and relaxation here. In terms of the climbing, of course you will need your full complement of climbing gear, including carabiners, nuts, tricams and runners.
After a long weekend of hiking, sleeping outdoors and climbing, you may wish to take the train back to Grand Central from Beacon. This is a beautiful route which follows The Hudson River all the way down to New York. It's a 90 minute train journey, with Beacon being a 40 minute taxi ride from The Gunks.
