Piano lessons offer a foundation both for those who go on to have careers in music and those who wish to enjoy musical creativity for other reasons.
The acclaimed ‘Russian school of piano playing’, which offers a very musical and rigorous foundation for further study, forms the basis for the beginner lessons. This can be augmented with lighter or more familiar pieces as needed.
The four major periods of Western classical music – Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and 20th-21st century – offer a wealth of choices for further piano study. The pupil may want to achieve a balance between different musical styles or choose to focus on a particular period or composer. The level of the repertoire extends to that of the final year recital of an undergraduate degree.

Extemporisation can form a valuable part in the early and intermediate stages of study, imbuing the learning process with musical exploration and a gratifying sense of freedom.
