Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) play a critical role in gastric cancer (GC) progression and metastasis. However, research comprehensively exploring tissue-derived lncRNAs for predicting peritoneal recurrence in patients with GC remains limited. This study aims to investigate the transcriptional landscape of lncRNAs in GC with peritoneal metastasis (PM) and to develop an integrated lncRNA-based score to predict peritoneal recurrence in patients with GC after radical gastrectomy. They analyzed the transcriptome profile of lncRNAs in paired peritoneal, primary gastric tumor, and normal tissue specimens from 12 patients with GC in the Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center (SYSUCC) discovery cohort. Key lncRNAs were identified via interactive analysis with the TCGA database and SYSUCC validation cohort. A score model was constructed using the LASSO regression model and nomogram COX regression and evaluated using receiver operating characteristic curves. The role of lncRNAs in the PM of GC was then examined through wound healing, Transwell, 3D multicellular tumor spheroid invasion, and peritoneal cavity xenograft tumorigenicity assays in mice. Five essential lncRNAs were screened and incorporated into the PM risk score to predict peritoneal recurrence-free survival (pRFS). They developed a comprehensive, integrated nomogram score, including the PM risk score, pT, pN, and tumor size, which could effectively predict the 5-year pRFS with an Area under the curve of 0.79 (95% CI: 0.71-0.88). Subsequently, they demonstrated that one of these lncRNAs, CASC15, promoted the invasion and migration of GC cells in vitro and facilitated the PM of GC cells in vivo, initially verifying that lncRNAs contribute to the PM of GC. Mechanistic analysis demonstrated that CASC15 promoted EMT and metastasis by activating the JNK and p38 pathways. A lncRNA-based integrated score was constructed in this study to predict peritoneal recurrence in patients clinically.

Landscape ecological risk assessment (LERA) is an effective tool developed in recent years to support landscape ecological construction and management. The ecological risk caused by landscape change or land-use and land-cover change has received increased attention by policy-makers. High-intensity human activities disturbed the pattern and function of ecosystem and the hotspot of landscape change in urban areas, which contributed to the uncertainty of ecological risk. Therefore, it is urgent to improve the LERA method to offer quantitative analysis for landscape management and comprehensive risk prevention. There are several methods used for LERA such as landscape metrics and landscape source-sink risk. However, the classic model of traditional ecological risk assessment followed the mode of risk source identification-receptor analysis-exposure and hazard assessment. In order to improve the LERA method in urban areas, this research followed the landscape metrics method, but improved the algorithm of vulnerability for landscape services. A series of landscape services indicators were reselected to denote landscape vulnerability, including carbon storage, water provision and purification, soil conservation, and habitat quality. This study used multi-source data to analyze the spatio-temporal changes and characteristics of landscape ecological risk based on 1 km × 1 km spatial resolution in Guangzhou, a typical area experiencing rapid urbanization, for the period 1990—2015. The results were as follows: (1) LERA based on landscape pattern and landscape service can effectively evaluate the spatial distribution of urban landscape ecological risk. The low landscape ecological risk type is typical and these areas were regularly distributed over the 25 years. In the study stage, the year of 2000 was the transition period. (2) The landscape disturbance degree of Guangzhou increased first and then decreased over the 1990—2015 period; 2000 was the year when the degree of landscape disturbance changed. Landscape vulnerability is increasing. Together, medium vulnerability and high vulnerability areas accounted for more than 60% of the area; these areas were more common in the south than the north, and more common in the west than in the east. The landscape ecological risk in Guangzhou was increasing before 2000, and showed a tendency to decrease after 2000. (3)The landscape ecological risks transition showed that landscape changes and ecological risk have a good spatial consistency in Guangzhou during the 25-year study period. The area with a low landscape risk was 40.74%, and this area was mostly distributed in the northern mountainous areas. The area with a high landscape risk was 6.67%, the transition from low risk to high risk was 32.28%, and high risk change to low risk was 20.31%. This shows that landscape changes in urban area has a high risk after rapid urbanization. However, the uncertainty of LERA still plagued the application of LERA in policy-making. Further research can pay more attention to the verification of assessment results or use scenario analysis to quantify spatiotemporal characteristics of risk to improve the scientific basis for the early warning and prediction of landscape ecological risk. Then, the LERA applications in urban areas can be acceptable for landscape management or policy-making.

This article introduces the Litchi Bay Canal Project, a recent cooperative historic landscape rejuvenation in Guangzhou, China. The Litchi Bay Canal and the Sai Kwan Literary Pagoda were at the core of Litchi Bay, historically an important scenic area in Canton (Guangzhou). However, since the 1950s, the area has changed. The Lungchun Warehouse was built around the pagoda and the canal was covered by concrete planks and turned into a road in 1993. Soon after that, antique shops appeared along the road and folk activities related to the canal and the pagoda ceased to happen. In 2010, a systematic rejuvenation project was launched to restore the historic landscape through negotiation with and the cooperation of government and non-government entities, villagers and nearby residents. The canal was uncovered, the pagoda revealed and the Lungchun Warehouse was renovated into an antiques market. Together, these actions produced attractive public spaces for today’s daily life as well as for traditional rituals. Based on the experience of the first author as the lead architect of the project, this article reviews the project, the restoration of the historic landscape and the regeneration of the urban public spaces. It analyses the holistic approach and the mechanisms of the project, discusses the thinking and specific operations to re-initiate the dialogue between the canal, the waterfront promenade and the historic buildings through an understanding of their mutual relationships.

The lives of Africans in Guangzhou have been negatively affected by Chinas tight visa and residency restrictions as well as police control whether it is through direct visa checking, which can lead to deportation, or indirect surveillance through shopping malls where Africans do business, the hotels they stay at, and neighbourhood committees where Africans reside. Most African importers are on a thirty-day tourist visa or a visitor visa lasting one to two months, which is too short for them to place orders, wait for factory deliveries and oversee shipping. Only a minor fraction of them have obtained longer residency permits (maximum one year) to stay in China to run cargo companies or stores. Some are there illegally, either on fraudulent visas (sometimes provided by fraudulent visa agencies) or overstaying due to lack of funds for buying a ticket house.

Downloadable! Landscape is an important object for research on local culture from a cultural geographical perspective. It is the spatial nature of memory that has seen the integrative study of memory and landscape receive increased attention from human geographers. The Qiqiao Festival is a traditional folk festival in the Lingnan region of Southern China. After half a century of suppression, the Qiqiao Festival in Zhucun was publically revitalized as the Guangzhou Qiqiao Cultural Festival, which coincided with the changing structure and significance of the landscape. This paper selected Zhucun, a typical urban village, as its case study and constructed an index system of festival landscapes. Through in-depth interviews, this paper studied the revival and restructure process of the Qiqiao Festival, and the role that landscapes play in the formation mechanism of memory on the part of subjects with different identities. The results showed that the elite and the local government selectively restructure festival landscapes, replacing authentic landscapes with official ones. The selection and production of a festival landscape constructed different memories among the subjects, where the festival memory of grassroots villagers was self-constructed and mostly came from traditional festival landscape elements while top-down interventions in the festival landscape constructed a different official memory for citizens and migrants to those of the villagers. The contemporary festival deviates from the original, which has weakened the conscious degree of cultural evolution and has had a reaction on the authenticity of memory. This research serves a reference for approaches in planning and conserving intangible cultural heritage in historic villages.
