Iceland Elopement

Here's what you need to know about how to plan your elopement in Iceland and how to have it professionally photographed.

If you're dreaming of a unique and adventurous wedding experience, eloping in Iceland is the perfect choice. Here's how to make your Icelandic elopement an unforgettable experience and how to work with an elopement photographer in Iceland. First, decide on the breathtaking location where you'll exchange your vows. From the majestic black sand beaches of Reynisfjara to the mystical waterfalls like Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss, Iceland offers countless stunning backdrops. Next, make sure to obtain all necessary legal documents in advance and check the requirements for your home country. Most couples decide to be legally married in their home country before the trip to Iceland to not have to worry about sending legal documents, notaries, and translations. The Thjodskra is the national registry in Iceland that handles all the legal documents and issues licenses. Consider hiring an Icelandic elopement photographer who can assist you with the logistics and guide you through the process. When it comes to photography, trust a professional who is experienced in capturing the ethereal beauty of Iceland's landscapes. Finally, consider turning your elopement into a honeymoon in Iceland and stay to explore the island for a few days after.

Elopement photography in Iceland

Elopement photography in Iceland in its essence showcases nature's raw beauty and the intimacy of two people. Stunning landscapes provide adventurous couples the perfect setting to exchange vows. From black sand beaches to waterfalls and glacial lagoons, every part of Iceland offers a unique backdrop. It is important to not only find an experienced photographer who's work is incredible, but someone who's also on the same wavelength as you and your partner. You will more than likely spend a full-day with your photographer, so working with one who gets you is just as important as the images.

Elopement locations in Iceland

South Iceland has many gems, it is also the most popular area amongst tourists. Two of the most famous waterfalls are Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, both provide amazing scenery for an elopement ceremony. These locations, along with many others on the south coast should be picked with care as they can get very crowded in summer. The most popular spots in Iceland are ideal for midnight sun ceremonies or winter elopements. This is where hiring an Icelandic elopement photographer is beneficial as they will know which spots are perfect for the season, and time of day. The glacier lagoon and the diamond beach in the south east are also incredible places to exchange vows in. In the west, Snæfellsnes peninsula has many famous landmarks, such as Kirkjufell mountain and Budakirkja church.

The best seasons to elope in Iceland

SUMMER

Summers are amazing in Iceland! There’s endless light as sun sun just barely kisses the horizon around midnight and sunsets last for hours. The typical temperature is 12-15 Celsius, so definitely bring layers to wear. Summers up north are generally brighter and a little bit warmer than down south where it tends to rain more. Although summer is the best time for an intimate elopement, it's also the busiest and most expensive time. It can get super crowded around some of the most photogenic spots unless you decide to elope after 8pm, which also has the best possible light.

FALL

Fall weather can be a tricky, you can get calm September days with awesome autumn colors or cold days with occasional snow, even in September. Most people think the northern lights are only visible in winter but that’s wrong. They can show up any time, as long as the night is dark enough, which starts happening in early fall. September is a great month for an elopement, the crowds will mostly be gone and you will not need 8 layers of clothing yet!

WINTER

Winter elopements in Iceland can be magical, especially if you have flexible plans and plenty of warm clothes. In December and January, the sun barely gets above the horizon, so the nights are long but there is something uniquely magical about it.

SPRING

Spring is a bit of a wildcard as well, it can still snow in April but the days are already quite long and the colors haven't turned yet, so if you want bright images with a lot of browns and yellows, that's your month. May is like September, you will not catch the best weather (you will get midnight sun in late May) but you will not run into the tough summer crowds either. Late May could be the best time to elope in Iceland.
