Manchester Wasp Control

I think that might be a wasp nest…
While a wasp nest in the middle of no-where can safely be ignored. However if there is a suspected wasp nest in a busy area where humans go about their daily lives, naturally its presence can cause worry and alarm. Calling Manchester Pest Control is a straightforward solution to ease your fears, by first of all confirming if it is a wasp nest and secondly, making the area safe.
Surely nests are only built outside or high up?
This is a common misconception. Wasp nests can be found indoors, outdoors, above ground, ground level and even underground! While trees or eaves/rafters of houses and sheds are common places to find a nest, if there is good food nearby, a Queen will start to build her nest anywhere. Wasps can enter a home through the smallest of gaps and have been known to build nests in cupboards, tucked under shelving, or even in lampshades! With many rooms having a down/up lighter style fixture, these are becoming increasingly popular as a starting point for nest, with the way they refract and reflect light attracting the wasps to them. Outside, nests can be found in old compost bins, holes in trees, around play equipment, under decking or slabbing, even in bird boxes. If the wasps have chosen to nest underground then it is likely to be covered by natural garden items such as waste or leaves which can make its presence harder to confirm. In summary wasps may nest anywhere, even in unexpected places!
How or why do wasps build a nest?
In spring a Queen wasp emerges from hibernation and looks for somewhere to build a nest. Low temperatures are unlikely to be the reason for wasp deaths in winter as often thought. Queens typically die at that time of year due to being eaten by spiders or birds, or simply their life span has naturally come to an end. Milder temperatures, however, are likely to encourage the queen to come into the open and start building soon in the year.
A queen looks for a strong firm base to start building her nest, which is created around a “stalk” type structure, around which she builds cells. As well as solid foundation she looks for sites with food sources nearby as well as a source of wood, such as fencing, sheds or even just rotten timber. She chews the wood and when it mixes with her saliva it becomes a cellular waxy substance which the nest is built from. You may recognise white lines running along fencing or wooden panels - these are a sign a queen is using the wood to build a nest, and affected wood can be treated with wood preservative or readily available creosote type formulations. Once she has laid the first larvae in the cells, she will search for food but once the larvae is hatched and grown, she carries on building and leaves them to bring food back to the nest, which is why nests can rapidly grow in size and house significant numbers of wasps by summer.
Scout wasps are given the mission of finding food sources - typically dead flesh or sweet things, so open bins, compost heaps are excellent buffets for wasps. The Scouts are also gossips! They soon let others know where the food can be found hence you will see large numbers of wasps, or swarms in and around your garden, indicating there is a nest nearby.

Confirming a wasp nest is present
Manchester Pest Control advise the best way to recognise a nest is to stand still and observe. By mid-summer a nest will be well populated and you will see large numbers of wasps around the nests and food sources. By quietly standing and watching the wasps, you will soon be able to identify the path they take to and from the nest with the food, giving you an idea of where the nest might be. In some cases you can see the nest for yourself but if nothing is visible, you will see an entry site the wasps lead you to such as a crack in a fascia or the hole where the tv aerial enters the house for example. Watch/follow the traffic and the wasps will lead you to their home. Manchester Pest Control understands people may have fears in observing or following wasps to locate a nest. In which case, try and gain as much information as possible by watching from a safe distance or behind a window, to pinpoint a general area and inform our trained technicians when they arrive on –site, and proceed to locate and identify the nest.
If in doubt, call us out! Manchester Pest Control are experienced professionals and experts at identifying nest sites for wasps and a wide range of other common pests
