In Scotland, we have very stringent fire safety regulations that are in place to help reduce injury and death caused by fire. New, tighter regulations were due to come into force in February 2021, however, enforcement has now been delayed until 2022 due to COVID-19 restrictions. This gives people a little longer to update their fire protection systems. These new regulations are to protect you and your family so we would advise installing or updating your fire and smoke alarm system as soon as possible. It will be the property owner’s responsibility to meet the new standard, however, the legal duty to enforce the standard rests with local authorities.
The law in Scotland states that all homes must have a smoke detection alarm. The rules were tightened up after the tragic fire at Grenfell Tower in London. The rules are in place to help prevent injury, loss of life, and damage to property. Since only a few houses now have open coal fires, you may believe that the chances of a house fire are slim, however that is far from the truth. We use more electricity than ever with hundreds of appliances and gadgets in every home. If your wiring is out of date, a fire can easily be started by overloading the system. Laptops and smartphones can overheat and cause a fire if they are lying on bed covers and fires can start at sockets that have too many appliances plugged into them.
Many homes today still have a battery-operated smoke alarm stuck on their hallway ceiling that the owner bought from their local DIY shop. If these alarms are regularly maintained and have their batteries replaced often, they are useful and will alert you to smoke in your home. However, they no longer meet the high safety standards that will be enforced in the near future.
The new regulations state that every domestic property must have:
Every alarm in your home must be interlinked. This means that if a fire starts in the kitchen when you are asleep upstairs, the alarm nearest your room will also be triggered to warn you.
