What is Gum Disease?
Gum disease, or periodontal disease, starts with plaque accumulating in the gap between the tooth and gum.
Plaque is made up of bacteria and this causes inflammation. Patients are aware of the gums becoming red and swollen and may bleed easily.
Although inflammation is a normal part of the body’s defence it can cause serious damage. If the inflammation is left untreated it can spread down the root damaging the supporting bone causing mobility and tooth loss.
Do I have Gum Disease?
Gum disease is very prevalent. Most people in the UK will suffer from gum inflammation now and again. It’s estimated 10% of the population are affected by the more serious and damaging type of gum disease.
Patients can be unaware they have gum disease and regular dental examinations are important to monitor the gum health.
How is gum disease treated?
An examination by a dentist or hygienist is required to assess the gums and formulate a treatment plan. Initial treatment will include showing you techniques for removing plaque and keeping the gum healthy at home. Changes in your lifestyle can help prevent gum disease and they will also be explored. Scaling is performed to remove the deposits of plaque on the teeth and, if required, down the root surfaces. It is then important to have the gums reviewed and the cleaning maintained over regular visits.
