Why does a hard drive fail?A brief description of the causes of a hard drive failure
Why Does a Hard Drive Fail?
There are many reasons that a hard drive can fail in use. Below is a list of some of the reasons.
- The older a hard drive is the more likely it is to fail. This is because of the magnetic coating on the drive platters. As well as this the small electric charge that goes to the hard drive heads can weaken over time. If the magnetic coating has degraded and the head charge is getting weaker, 2 problems are causing an inability to read the data stored on the drive correctly. This can sometimes be overcome by using a data recovery machine such as the Deepspar DDI recovery machine. If this fails then the only option would be to fit a replacement newer set of heads to the drive to improve the reading quality of the drive.
- Some customers we have dealt with at JT Data Recovery in Edinburgh don’t have a good track record of looking after their hard drives. Some drives have had an impact, dropped on the floor or been involve in a fire in one case. Don’t even get me started on the drives we’ve seen with water damage. We are a hard drive recovery specialist, its the nature of the job. Nothing surprises us anymore.
- Of course not all hard drive failures are caused by physical defect, some can be what’s called a logical problem. This means the drive physically is fine but the data cannot be accessed. The drive may ask to be formatted when it's connected or it may appear as unformatted or unallocated in device manager on your typical Windows PC. This can usually be recovered using software such as R-Studio Technician.
- If your hard drive has had an impact or major failure then we would normally obtain a donor drive and temporarily use these donor parts to affect a repair on the faulty drive just long enough to recover the customer’s data.
